Seit 1998 ist Matthias Brandner freischaffend mit eigenem Atelier für Architektur und Kunst in Berlin tätig. Die umfassende Gestaltung von Bauwerken ist der Schwerpunkt von Brandners Schaffen. Gebaute Umwelt als Gesamtkunstwerk ist das Ziel seiner umfangreichen Arbeit und Ergebnis des bisherigen reichhaltigen Werkes. Neben dem Entwurf von Gebäuden und der klassischen Malerei beschäftigt sich Matthias Brandner mit dem Bereich der Kunst am Bau und Architektur. So hat er sehr umfangreiche Wandgemälde zur Gestaltung von Neubauten und Bestandsimmobilien erarbeitet. Bekannt wurde Matthias Brandner durch zahlreiche Einzelausstellungen im In- und Ausland sowie durch vielfältige Veröffentlichungen und Auftragsarbeiten. Seine Arbeiten befinden sich in bedeutenden privaten Sammlungen wie z.B. der Deutschen Bank AG. Ein betont interdisziplinärer Gestaltungswille durchzieht sein Gesamtwerk und kennzeichnet in besonderer Weise die Persönlichkeit des Künstlers Matthias Brandner.
